NICE NEIGHBORHOOD
One of my friends was able to get a nice, two-bedroom apartment in the Ukrainian Village for about 600 dollars a month. This is the neighborhood next to Wicker Park and Bucktown so that’s quite the steal. But it’s because his apartment is down the street from Robert Clemente High School. What a Ukrainian Village neighborhood directory probably won’t tell you is that Robert Clemente High School has more violent crimes occurring within its walls than any other school in the city of Chicago. Any given day, you’ll find a few police cars parked in front of the high school and, rest assured, there’s always some officers in uniform, roaming the halls and manning the metal detectors. That’s why my friend’s rent is so low. Of course this doesn’t mean that he’s dodging gunfire every time he runs across the street to the store. In fact, while he’s the one who told me the high school was so violent, he’s never been in the crossfire of anything. Its not like he’s right next door to the school too. Still, the high school’s almost in Wicker Park. Does anyone associate Wicker Park with gang shootings and high school crime? But the school’s right there on Division and Western, ironically right near a hospital.
